The Girls
words and art by Candi Bartlett |08/13/2023
They put a little extra float in their feet.
Pointed hats posed with flare,
Crimps and knots in their hair.
Painting wide smiles,
Waiting for the high moon howl.
Then it is time,
In the darkest of hours,
To tie up their robes
Made perfect for flight.
They laugh and dance and practice every scary face,
Putting every last touch in place.
Ready to haunt,
To terrify and chase,
They fly up into the night,
They must go with haste.
It is only for so long,
Only every now and then,
They get to let their hair down
And get the loudest cackles in.
